(From Our Own Reporter) HANMER SF RINGS. June 8
More than 50 consulting engineers from all over New Zealand this evening attended a dinner which marked the opening of the annual conference of the consulting engineers' division of the New Zealand Institution of Engineers The conference will end on Monday evening
"I bow to your good sense in coming to this area." said the chairman of the Amuri CMinty Council (Mr A A Macfarlane) in welcoming the delegates His council, he said, had for the last 16 years had its engineering done by a firm of consulting engineers Those engineers had paid the council better than if it had had an engineer of its own Consulting engineers should take all steps to make their potentialities known and should advance with confidence. said the chairman of the division (Mr E. R. Garden).
It had been demonstrated that New Zealand engineers could do almost any job. he said. The amount of engineering work done in the country must increase if the future'of the country was to be assured. “If we have an increased place in the New Zealand economy it is going to be in competition with consulting engineers from overseas.’’ he said. However, there was no objection to this, and it was realised there were specialists from overseas who could do work which could not be done in New Zealand. Mr Garden said that New Zealand consulting engineers were not accorded sufficient recognition by the community. He sugested engineers could do more in this sphere of community service and endeavour to get away from purely technical matters and ‘‘into the world a bit”
