Magistrate’s Court INTOXICATED DRIVER GAOLED FOR SEVEN DAYS

Seven days' imprisonment. with cancellation of his driver’s licence for three years, was imposed on Andrew John Black, aged 41, a farm labourer, when he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to a charge of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs. Mr E. A. Lee. S.M., was on the Bench. Sergeant V. F. Townshend said t>h®t a traffic officer on duty in Riccarton at 7.45 p.m. on Monday was told that a car being driven in Yaldhurst road was weaving from side to side. When the traffic officer reached the car it was parked with the lights on full. It was started and driven a short distance before being stooped by the traffic officer The traffic officer formed the opinion that Black was unfit to drive, and he was later certified as unfit to drive by a police doctor. STOLE CAMERAS Pleading guilty to stealing cameras and accessories, of a total value of £67 10s. on June 4, David Douglas McDonald, aged S 3, was convicted and remanded until June 11 for sentence. Bail was granted. Sergeant Townshend said that two men parked their cars in Hatley avenue about 2 p.m. and watched a women’s hockey match. Both men had cameras in their cars and later in the afternoon a friend of one of the men sew a man ceding away from the ears. The cameras were found to be missing, and the men chased the accused. When overtaken, he admitted the thefts. He said he had taken the ’cameras on a vague impulse. DISMISSED . A charge against Terence Raloh William O'Shea King, aged 43, of assaulting his wife on Jerne 2. was dismissed through lack of prosecution. His wife declined to give evidence. King (Mr A. K Archer) pleaded not guilty. REMANDED On a joint charge of burglary at a service station at 121 Sea view road. New Brighton, on June 4, Daivd Joseph Fitzsimmons, aged 22. and Bruce Robert Hull, aged 29, were remanded on bail until June 11. Applications for suporession of name were refused. On a charge of false pretences on Mav 20. involving £lO IQs, David Tomlins, aged 21. a workman, was remanded until June 8. On charges of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs and having illegal lottery tickets in his possession on May 28. Arthur George Lawson, aged 27, was remanded on ball until June 18. George Bernard Lawson, aged 65, was remanded on bail until June 18 on a charge of using obscene language on May 28.

CHARGE AMENDED After hearing evidence for the prosecution and the defence on a charge against David Allen Smith, aged 30 a driver, of driving Jn a manner which might have been dangerous, the Magistrate amended the charge to one of driving without due care and attention. Smith pleaded not guilty to the original charge but guilty to the amended one He was represented by Mr D J Hill. A fine of £7 10s was imposed. Traffic Officer A. Laing said he saw a van driven by the defendant travelling more than 30 miles an hour in Lichfield street at 9.55 a m on March 13. He chased the van and saw it swerve to the incorrect side of the road to pass a vehicle and then narrowly miss a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

The van then cut the corner into Durham street and the driver gave no indication that he intended to turn, and at the Cashel street lights the van went through the amber light. Colin Robert Campbell said that he was crossing Lichfield street and had to

run to avoid being hit by the van. In evidence Smith said that he missed Campbell easily and would have braked if he thought he was going to hit him.
