Earthquake Risks
Sir, —News from Westport indicates that school children are being encouraged to take refuge under heavy furniture when shocks occur. Is it not a fact that the Education Board's instructions to schools make it mandatory for headmasters to evacuate buildings in such emergencies.—Yours, etc., PARENT. May 25. 1962. IThe secretary-manager of the Canterbury Education Board (Mr W. P Spencer) said: “Teachers are instructed that, in the event of an earthquake, a classroom door should be opened as soon as a shock is felt and the Children instructed to take immediate cover under their desks as a protection against falling plaster and debris. As soon as the shock has died down rooms should be evacuated Teachers are reminded periodically of the importance of regular practice in order that there should be no hitch or confusion in clearing the sohocl in a prompt and orderly' manner should any emergency arise.”]
