CRICKET Pakistan Fails, England Wins With 1½ Days Left

(N.Z J’.A.-Reuter— Copyright) BIRMINGHAM, June 5. England scored an overwhelming victory by an innings and 24 runs over Pakistan to win the first cricket test with more than a day and a half to spare at Birmingham yesterday. The end came soon after lunch, a belated ninth wicket stand delaying England’s victory and almost making the side bat again.

Pakistan resumed yesterday at 158 for four in its second innings, and a very quick finish seemed in prospect when four more pickets fell for another 49 runs. But then the tailenders, Nasim-ul-Ghani and Mahmood Hussain, with gay, entertaining cricket, stayed together until lunch, hammering 50 runs in 42 minutes. However, the pace bowler, F. S. Trueman, who had not shown his best form in the match, finished off the innings in 24 minutes after the interval. Nasim, a 21-year-old lefthander. made 35, and Mahmood 22. But the top scorer for Pakistan was Saeed Ahmed, who took his Saturday’s total of 30 to 65. Elegant Strokes He batted altogether for two hours and a quarter and his elegant wristy strokes brought him 11 boundaries. J. B, Statham's accurate

and hostile bowling wrecked Pakistan's hopes of making any real show in the morning. For the personal cost of eight runs he dismissed Burk:, the Pakistan captain, and Mathias. A. Lock, the Surrey spinner, completed the morning’s rout by having Saeed caught at silly mid-on and dismissing Alam in his next over.

Nasim and Mahmood pulled, drove and swept their way merrily along to lunch in such confident fashion that it seemed likely England might have to bat again. But with the first bail after the interval, Trueman had Mahmood caught at slip. Twenty-<four minutes later, Nasim’s fighting knock ended with a catch at gully. ENGLAND First Innings G.
