Defeat Of U.S. Player

Green, scored a fine victory over a leading American in the first round of the Northern women’s singles championship at Manchester yesterday. Miss Green played , extremely well to beat a United States Wightman Cup player. Miss M. Varner, 9-7, fl-4. A British player, Miss E. Star ie, was also beaten in the same round. She lost to an Australian, Miss J. Tegart, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. In the men’s singles, R. N. Hawkes and I. S. Crookenden reached the third round. Results included:— _ Men’s Singles First Round.—M. Otway (New Zealand) beat G. Wolstenhulme (Lancashire), 6-2, 6-2. Second Round.—R. N. Hawkes (New Zealand) beat T. Ryan (South Africa), 3-6, 7-5, 10-8; N. Kumar (India) beat’ W. Reid (Australia), 4-6, 6-1, 6-3; W. Bowrey (Australia) beat T. Richardson (Lancashire). 6-0, 6-1; G. Knox (Australia) beat J. R. Ramsbotom (Yorkshire), 6-1, 8-1; G. C. Bluett (Middlesex) beat R. G. Clarke (New Zealand), 8-1, 6-2; I. S. Crookenden (New Zealand) beat E. Woodruff (Lancashire). 6-1, 9-7.

Women’s Singles First Round.—Miss J. Tegart (Australia) beat Miss E. Starkie (Yorkshire), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1; Miss E. Green (New Zealand) beat Miss M. Varner (United States), 9-7, 8-4; Miss J. A. Hawkes (Staffordshire) beat Miss S. Rich (New Zealand), 6-2, 6-2; Mrs J. W. Cawthome (Surrey) beat Miss M. A. Smith (New Zealand), 6-2, 6-2.
