Church Policy Statement

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) GLASGOW. June 5. No reunion with the Church of Rome was “even thinkable” unless the Catholic Church was transformed into a Protestant Church, the Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland (the Rev. N. A. P. Bisset) said last night. The United Free Church could not be opposed to union as such, provided it could be achieved on the basis of shared conviction and without sacrifice of essential principles, he said.

However, the United Free Church could not accept that the church’s ills and problems were all going to be solved merely by uniting the various organisations.

“That the church is divided into denominations is not, in our view, the worst of the evils that afflict it." he said. “We hold that union of a wrong kind might well place the church in a worse position that its divided parts had been in before.”

Mr Bisset was delivering his opening address to the General Assembly of the United Free Church of Scotland.
