PROTEST BY CREW

Sick Seaman’s Return (N.Z. Press Association) TIMARU, May 25. Twelve seamen in the Hong Kong freighter Daisen stopped work today for three hours in protest against alleged ill-treatment of a fellow crew -member suffering from tuberculosis. The quartermaster, Ching Ai Wuen, aged 46. has been in the Timaru Hospital since May 12. He will rejoin the ship on Tuesday when she sails direct for Nagoya, Japan. The seamen complained that in the interests of themselves and the sick man he should remain in Timaru until fully recovered. They considered he would be a danger to their health. The ship’s master, Captain C. Lines, denied the seamen's claims.

He said the doctors had given their permission for Ching to return to the Daisen and to make the trip to Japan. It would have been too expensive to have kept him in Timaru. said Captain Lines The company would pay for his medical treatment in Hong Kong.
