£7m TOLL REVENUE
55 Million Calls Last Year (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 25 About £7 million is received by the Post Office each year in toll charges. For the year ended March 31, 1962, New Zealanders made 55.500,000 toll calls, which maintained the 8 per cent, average annual increase since 1959. This figure does not include metered toll calls which are not handled by a tollroom operator. It is expected by the Post Office that for the year ending March 31. 1963. the total will be in the region of 60.000.000—4.500,000 more than this last year. Among the reasons given by the department for the continuing upward trend in the amount of toll traffic are more telephones, and the greater number of toll circuits which has resulted in on-demand calls being made to many parts of New Zealand.
