Jouhaud Seeking New Trial

(N Z.P .A.-Reuter—Copyright)

PARIS. May 25. Lawyers for the former general, Edmound Jouhaud, who was once the second-in-command of the Secret Army Organisation (0.A.5.), have asked for a revision of his death sentence.

This is a result of the decision by the High Military Tribunal not to condemn the former general Raoul Salan, to death for leading the Secret Army Organisation. There is widespread speculation about what President de Gaulle will do now. He is "furious but by no means downcast” by the verdict, according to his officials. The Information Minister (Mr Alain Peyrefitte) said

yesterday that General de Gaulle would, in the very immediate future, announce measures to repress sedition. Some thought Salan would in due course be brought before another court on new charges. Others speculated on whether General de Gaulle would now commute Jou-

hand’s death sentence to imprisonment or have him executed as soon as possible. Dissolution Forecast

In London, the “Daily Telegraph” said today that the French Government might order the dissolution of the High Military Tribunal which sentenced Salan,

The newspaper said the Government was reported to be so dissatisfied with the sentence -it might dissolve the tribunal and submit future O.A.S. cases to normal French judicial procedure. President de Gaulle, “particularly bitter” because the tribunal found extenuating circumstances for Salan, had decided to introduce special judicial measures “to assure the effective repression of subversion and crimes.”

The newspaper said the new measures were a secret but were expected to be drastic. One possibility was the institution of courts martial in France to hand out summary justice to Secret Army terrorists.
