Harbour Board Policy On Slipways And Sheds
An annual fee of £5 5s was fixed by the Lyttelton Harbour Board yesterday for foreshore licences. The board had a comprehensive report on slipways and jetties around the harbour. It ordered the removal of some jetties and repairs to others. Every conceivable aspect had been investigated, said the special committee, the chairman of which was Mr L. G. Amos, which examined the harbour. 'The conclusions reached are thoughtful and produced in the hope that it will assist the board in carrying out a long-standing policy,” the committee said. ‘‘We have tried to be liberal in view and far from dictatorial, but someone will be hurt and upset.” In Charteris Bay, the board agreed that two small jetties, two wooden platforms and three slipways should be removed. Six other slipways were required to be repaired. The owners -were given
until October 31 to remove or repair slipways. It was recommended to the Mount Herbert County Council that boatshed owners should be required to provide a suitable gangway to enable the public to pass in front of sheds at high tide.
Improvements were ordered for some sheds in Hays Bay and Church Bay. Diamond Harbour was unsuitable for private slipways, the committee said.
The board agreed with a recommendation that the Purau Bay jetty should be improved at an estimated cost of £ll7O. It also recommended to the County Council that boatsheds should be built to standard design. comply with a standard specification and be located to conform with the shore line. The board urged that boatsheds be built in groups of four, with a dear space of three feet between groups to form a fire break and give access to the beach.
