MILK-TRUCK COVERINGS

Draft By-Law Proposed The covering of milk delivery vehicles was one of the most vital questions that had come before the NewZealand Milk Authorities' Association for a long time, said a delegate from Palmerston North /Mr C. O. Day) at the annual conference of the association in Christchurch yesterday. "I feel that if anything is to be done it must be done on a Dominion basis and that we must speak with a united voice in the administration of the Milk Act.”

The conference agreed tha‘ a draft by-law on the covering of milk trucks should be drawn up and circulated to members with the recommendallon that it should form the basis of a by-law for individual districts. The draft would then be discussed at a conference of the Milk Vendors’ Association and the Milk Authorities’ Association.

Mr G. D. Hattaway said that some progress had been made in Christchurch. Milk vendors had been approached with the New Zealand Milk Board's plan for canopies costing between £lBO and £250. “It war almost like waving a red flag at a bull." he said. “We sought the co-opera-tion of those in the industry and the milk vendors themselves. then drew’ up a plan on a modified scale.” Mr Hattaw’ay said the association had power to act and should do something for itself, and not alwavs rely on the Government. He said it was hoped that all the trucks in Christchurch would be covered by the next licensing period. Delegates were given the opportunity of examining two types of covered milk trucks used in Christchurch, and in the afternoon visited the dairy farm of Mr C W Humm at Waikuku. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr H. S Delves (Wanganui); vicepresident. Mr K. J. Marlow (Dunedin); secretary and treasurer. Mr D. F. Glenny (Wanganui); executive Messrs R. G. Brown (Christchurch), D. V. Mills .(Hamilton), and E J. B. Matthews (Hutt Valley).

“I am sure the Milk Act of 1944 can be amended and improved, and its administration improved, only by meetings of this kind." said the Mayor of Christchurch iMr G. Manning) addressing the conference. Delegates could pool their experiences and study common problems “You are engaged in one of the most important activities of our country in seeing that the people receive a safe milk supply. It is a tremendous responsibility to see that this is provided for young children and mothers.”
