BURNSIDE DISPUTE
Settlement Reached (NZ. Press Association) DUNEDIN. May 23. A settlement has now been reached between the Burnside branch of the Freezing Workers’ Union and the New Zealand Refrigerating Company. This was announced today by the South Island Conciliation Commissioner <Mr S. W. Armstrong). The settlement comes after meetings in Dunedin and in Christchurch between union and company representatives. Both meetings were under the chairmanship of Mr Armstrong. The meeting in Dunedin last week was adjourned after discussing the dismissal of men from the Burnside works two years ago. It is understood the adjournment was after matters relating to the policy of the companyhad been raised. The meeting continued in Christchurch this week, and Mr Armstrong said yesterday that “all concerned in the dispute hope and expect that friendly industrial relations have been restored” but was not prepared to give details of the terms of the settlement.
The long-standing question of the dismissal of the men at Burnside resulted in a stoppage at the works for a month from April 9 to May 8.
The men agreed to resume killing after a “back-to-work recommendation” from the annual conference of the Federation of Labour.
