SHIPS FOR TUNA

Two Import Licences (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 22 Import licences had been issued for two vessels to be used in the tuna-fishing industry in New Zealand, the Minister of Customs <Mr Shelton) said today. “The Government recognises the potential of the tuna industry, particularly for the export market, and is willing to foster its development.” said Mr Shelton. “The issue of tljese licences has been approved to help establish this development of our fisheries and thereby provide the means for developing an economic fishcanning industry.” he said Ultimately it was hoped to build up a fleet operated by experienced men that would enable large-scale canning of fish for the export market together with the manufacture of by-products. The Minister of Marine (Mr Gerard) also said today that his department welcomes the granting of import licences for the two tunafishing vessels. “It will speed the granting of fishing licences to the parties concerned.” he said.
