CHURCH IN ICING
Jubilee Cake Decoration A replica of St. Stephen’s Church, Shirley, has been made in icing by a member of the parish. Miss Peggy Jarvis, for the church's fiftieth jubilee cake. The church can be lit from within, and details such as the altar, altar rails, pulpit and pillars have been incorporated. Miss Jarvis, a 23-year-old office worker, made the model from several photographs of St. Stephen’s. She made several scale drawings from the photographs, and cut out a cardboard model which she copied in rolled-out icing. Exterior details are complete down to the last brick, window, and the church steps and surrounding paths. The icing has been painted the same colour as the church. Features of the church have been included. These are the fleur-de-lis, representing the Trinity and painted round the church’s altar; the gold cross seen on the St. Stephen's church banner and the church crest. The cake will be cut tonight at a reception, the main function of the jubilee celebrations. Last year Miss Jarvis made a replica in icing of Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, when its Mothers' Union celebrated its seventy-fifth anniversary.
