Tennis BAD DAY FOR N.Z. TEAM
Five Men Out Of Singles (N.Z.P A -Reuter—Copyright) PARIS. May 22. New Zealand's men’s tennis team had a disastrous first day in the French singles championship at Paris yesterday. At the end of the day no NewZealander was left in the event. All their men except »I. S. Crookenden had to qualify, and he had the ill-luck to draw the ninth seed, J. Lundquist, of Sweden. Crookenden played courageously. Although he was beaten in straight sets—B-6. 6-3, 6-3 he gave Lundquist a lot of trouble. He had a set point at 6-5 in the twelfth game, but he netted a backhand return and allowed the Swede to escape. R. K. Hawkes, the only one of the other four New Zealanders to come through the qualitving tournament, found the tall Chilean. P. Rodriguez. too strong, and was beaten 6-4, 6-1. 6-2.
