EARTHQUAKE CLAIMS
No Change In Franchise (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 21. Ths Cabinet made no suggestion today of altering the cover franchise in claims for earthquake damage, the Minister in charge of the Earthquake and War Damage Commission (Mr Kinsella) said tonight. Mr Kinsella said he reported to the Cabinet on his inspection of earthquake damage last Friday in Westport. “I explained the matter of franchise. But there was no suggestion that any change be made.” he said. Mr Kinsella said the cover franchise was necessary mainly because of the difficulty of establishing whether earthquake was to blame for damage when only small amounts of money were involved. Council Decision The Greymouth Borough Council tonight supported Mr P. Blanchfield, M.P.. in his representations to have the £lO franchise waived by the Government. , The council claimed that a united attack from all local bodies and public organisations was necessary. Councillors said the public were not responsible for 'earthquakes, and they should 'not be required to suffer the 'consequences of any franchise 'governing damage repairs.
It was decided to inform the Minister that the £lO franchise was a hardship and request that it be abolished
