COACHING JUNIORS
20 To Be In Squad
(N.Z Press Association) WELLINGTON. May 21. Twenty leading junior tennis players will receive specialised coaching from the Australian coach. L. Atkins, next season. This coaching will take the place of the present sponsored players' scheme, whereby the national association sponsors junior and intermediate players to groups of tournaments throughout the country. The new proposal was announced at tonight’s meeting of the management ’committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association.
The names of the 10 boys and 10 girls will be announced later. It is thought that the basis of the selection of members of the squad will be the New Zealand junior ranking lists recently announced.
It is intended to give both the boys and girls the benefit of one week each with Atkins at a venue to be decided. The coaching will take place before the major tournament circuit, which will begin at Auckland on Boxing Day. Although the sponsorship of players next season will not apply, the Junior Davis Cup squad will again be named. The squad is normally of eight players and plays the major tournament circuit. There might, however, be changes in the formation of the squad this season, it was reported at the meeting.
