GOOD-DESIGN EXHIBITION
Manufacturers' Praise The good-deeign exhibition was serving an extremely useful purpose, because many visitors to it had expressed surprise that so many good products could be made in New Zealand, said the president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. H. Stewart) at a meeting last evening of the association’s council. “That is not our view as manufacturers, of course.” said Mr Stewart. "I hea-d quite a number of persons at the opening of the exhibition saying. ’lt is too good to be made in New Zealand.* I am quite sure this exhibition will do us no harm, and will do us a lot of good. “I know that many of us have been to see the exhibition. and I think that all members of our association should see it. I think they should send their staffs to see the exhibition.” Mr Stewart was speaking to an interim report on the exhibition by the president of the Design Association of New Zealand (Mr P. Pascoe) which was read to the meeting. The report said that the first print of catalogues (1506) had sold out and a reprint was selling. The report said that one manufacturer had offered £lOO to put two products in the exhibition but had been refused, because it had been made after the closing date, although the entry fee was £l5 for each product. One exhibitor had sold seven time space-heaters priced at more than £lOO each.
“It is an eve-opener.” Mid Mr W. H. Price "I consider that a very good Cross-sec-tion of the public is visiting the exhibition." Mr Stewart said that the Manufacturers’ Association had greatly assisted the Design Association, as Mr Pascoe had acknowledged, with thanks, in his interim report on the exhibition.
