New Commander Of U.S. Antarctic Force
Rear-Admiral J. R. Reedy will succeed Rear-Admiral D M. Tyree as commander of the United States naval support force. Antarctica. The announcement by the Navy in Washington was received at Antarctic advance headquarters at Harewood yesterday. Admiral Tyree’s new appointment has not yet been announced.
The official change of command will not take place for some months, probably in the middle of the 1962-63 season. Admiral Reedy will arrive in New Zealand in September, and will be briefed by Admiral Tyree on the Navy’s work in the Antarctic. Admiral Reedy will command the task force which supports the United States scientific programme in the Antarctic, and his forces will include 3000 men. 11 ships and more than 30 aircraft. The aircraft include one Navy and one Military Air Transport Service squadron.
Also under his command will be units of the United States Coast Guard, Military Sea Transportation Service, and specialists assigned to the Army and Marine Corps. Admiral Reedy has been connected with naval aviation for about 30 years, and is at present commander of Carrier Division 20. an antisubmarine unit. He formerly commanded the carrier Lexington. During the Second World
War Admiral Reedy was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service as commanding officer of a bombing squadron and patrol group during anti-submarine warfare in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel. Since assuming comhaand in 1959, Admiral Tyree has supervised the installation of a 1500 kilowatt nuclear power plant at McMurdo station and the construction of an under-snow city at Byrd station, 800 miles inland from McMurdo station.
