CONGO AND KATANGA
Tshombe Ready For Union (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) ELISABETHVILLE, May 17. President Tshombe today declared openly for the first time that he was prepared to end Katanga’s secession from the Congo. He is due to resume talks with the Congolese Prime Minister (Mr Cyrille Adoula) in Leopoldville on reunification of the country. He told a press conference today all Katangese knew that “our union with our Congolese brothers” was a stage “towards the unity of black Africa.” But he emphasised that Katanga’s position had never been stronger and the “abandonment of sovereignty which we are ready to concede to Leopoldville,” was not necessary. The Katangese President launched a strong attack on Mr Adoula and challenged him to release 4000 people who he said were detained in and round Leopoldville. Mr Tshombe said this was a condition of regarding Mr Adoula as a “valid negotiating partner.” Observers saw this as a virtual ultimatum, following this week’s Katanga announcement that all political prisoners in the State had been freed.
