Obituary MISS E. FORD

•The Press" Special Service TIMARU, May 20. Miss Ethel Ford, who died in Timaru recently in her ninety-sixth year, was the first women to ride horseback from Timaru to Mount Cook and back She made the journey in 1883 with a party travelling in a four-in-hand, camping at Pukaki and then at Mount Cook. Born at Holme station in 1867, the only daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Ford. Miss Ford was an enthusiastic horsewomen who followed the South Canterbury Hunt and a private pack of beagles owned by Mr F Archer Her father was manager for Mr Edward Elworthy from 1865 to 1873. when her family moved to Kereru. In 1878 they returned to Timaru and took over “Foxdown,” at Mungati, where her nephew, Mr R. M. Ford, still farms. , Miss Ford had a wide circle of friends throughout New Zealand and in England. She visited Britain four times. Throughout her life she retained a love for children. For the last seven years she had been a resident of Margaret Wilson Home, Timaru

McGiffert the decorative Mrs F Amor was second and Mrs L Fletcher third in the cut blooms section and Mrs J Matthews was second and Mesdames R Lane and K Henderson third equal in the decorative section.
