HARRIERS J. MACDONALD WINS KENNETT CUP RACE

The Canterbury mile champion. J. D. Macdonald (Olympics, ran the longer distance of the senior section of the Kennett Cup steeplechases at the Riccarton racecourse on Saturday with as much ability as he showed in the shorter events on the track during the summer. Macdonald cleared away from the field after the first half-mile to win by nearly 90yds in 16min 31sec, a time that has been bettered by only three other runners. Macdonald was well supported by his team mates and the club scored its fourth successive win in the teams’ match. Although Macdonald • returned one of the fastest times for the race he was still 30sec outside the record of the Dunedin runner and former New Zealand track representative. A. Potts, who watched Saturday’s as manager of the Celtic United team. Although Macdonald was r an early leader he was handily placed, and after the field settled down he took a short lead from B. Curie Baptist) at the end of a half-mile, with D. Reece and R. Stevens 'both Olympic) handy. While Macdonald was steadily improving his winning margin, some interesting changes were taking place for the lesser honours. Olympic already had a firm grip on the teams’ contest, with another of its members, T. Preece, having come through third on the top bend. Preece had to give way to B. Turner (Baptist), who almost caught Curie at one stage with a solid run on the second round. A former Canterbury representative and New Zealand Universities’ blue. D M. Taylor. made a strong bid over the second lap also, pushing Reece and Stevens back to sixth and seventh places. Stevens lost another place when he was outsprinted by C. Saxon (Technical) in the run for the finish. Christchurch Success The Christchurch club was as successful in the junior (under 19; division as Olympic was in the senior. The individual winner. A. Dyer (Christchurch) set such a solid P-ee that last year's winner, A. Bayard (Anglican)* was left nearly 70yds behind. Dyer's time of 16min 57sec was good enough to hdve put in the first four of the senior race over the same distance. Dyer’s team was an easy winner of the teams' section. Christchurch had another convincing win in the teams' competition in the colts’ (under 16) race, in which the individual w inner was J. Williams i Marist) with a time of 9min 34sec for the mile and three-quarters. Williams was almost 60yds ahead of the second man, S. Tarrant (Baptist). In the two women's races, the major honours were taken by Ladies' Pioneer, which provided both the individual winners and the successful teams. Winner of the junior division last season. Miss M. Dixey won the senior race in Umin Msec. In the junior contest, Misses M. Ward and P. Hemingsen tied for first place in 12min 15sec. Fastest time runner in the women's race at the centre's opening of the season relays a fortnight ago. Miss P. Clausen (Toe H) was a strong challenger in the senior women's division. Had Miss Clausen not been affected by illness during the last fortnight she might have sustained her challenge of Miss Dixey through the last 50 yards. Results:— MEN Senior Individuals —J D.
