Table Tennis CANTERBURY’S EASY WINS AT NELSON

Canterbury’s table tennis representative teams started the season in dashing form with overwhelming victories over Neteon, Marlborough, and West Coast in the quadrangular tournament held in Neteon over the week-end The match against Nelson was won 22-6, and those against Marlborough and West Coast were each won 28-6. Canterbury's men were rarely tested, although the women had some close matches against Neteon. The Marlborough men were of a good standard,, and J. Taylor and R. Morris gave good displays. Taylor was in good form, alunough he failed to repeat his victory over T. R D. Flint in the same tournament last season. Flint was too steady Morns, a lefthander, hit wedl against V. N. Brightwell, but could not clinch the vital points.

J. Armstrong was in complete control in all his matches, although perhaps a little too serious when playing L. Wells (Nelsonl. After 15 minutes in the first game the score was 6-4 to Armstrong and. after the application of the expedite rule. Wells could score no more points. At 2-all in the second game the rule was again enforced. but Armstrong could well have taken the opportunity for sonic useful hitting practise. M. Smith (Nelson) proved his side's best player In an entertaining match with Brightwell. hitting well on both backhand and forehand. Later he and K. Sharland scored an upset doubles win over Brightwell and Flint. D. D. M Stewart was untroubled to maintain his unbeaten record in representative play, and he and Mrs J. Shadboit were the only players to come through the tournament without a defeat. Mrs Shadbolt was outstanding in the women's section, with Mrs T. May surprisingly losing to the consistent Miss A. Eden (Nelson). Miss Eden plays a strong hitting game winch Mrs May was unable to counter. Mrs Y Boulton and Miss J. Rich, playing in the bottom half of the Canterbury team, both lost very’ narrowly to Miss J. Sara (Nelson). Miss Sara is a player of great ability with a very strong forehand drive, and the Canterbury players did well to extend her fully. Mrs Boulton showed an excellent defence in her match with Miss Sara, and returned some very fierce drives. Results were:— V. NELSON Men’s Singles. Armstrong beat M.
