Slatey Unbeaten As Hurdler

Slatey jumped neatly and outran his rivals for a decisive win in the Brackenfield Hurdles at Amberley on Saturday. This was his second win in as many starts as a jumper for his Dobson owner-trainer, Mr S. W. Gillman. It was an all-Dobson victory, for the Booby Trap gelding was ridden by C. Creagh, who was enjoying his first win, but has not done much race riding. Slatey did not school well at Riccarton last Thursday, but did not put k foot wrong on Saturday. He was soon In front, and set a pace that had most of the others battling a good way out. Morelia led the chase after him for a time, but was forced into jumping errors. Then The Frenchman was home turn, was in front soon after and resisted a

left to lead a lone chase after Slatey. The Frenchman ran the race out strongly, but Slatey beat him soundly by a length and a half. Sports Date nosed the tiring Morelia out of third. Pyrites, the next to finish, broke down during the race. NOVICE DIVISIONS

Divisions of the Novice Stakes were won by the two-year-old Argus and the three-year-old Edict, the latter a brother of the smart mare, Royal Order. Argus was one of three runners for the Murfitt stable in the first division. He caught the pacemaking Last Mate close to home and won going away by half a length. Argus’s stablemate, Mutineer, was two lengths and a half back third, and then there was half a length to Crackers. The long-striding Edict gave Canadiana a start of something like three lengths from the home turn in the second division and beat her by a neck. They had the finish to themselves a length and a half .clear of San Saba, which contended for the lead with Canadiana to the straight NECK VICTORY Timatan was rewarded for some fairly solid autumn performances with a win in the Glasnevin Handicap. Mr R. Tohill’s four-year-old Timanova gelding moved to second behind the favourite, On The Way, on the challenge from Purr Along by a neck. The tiring On The Way, whieh had been responsible for much of the pace, was a length and a half back third. Robin Adair made some ground, but slowly, for fourth. SPECTACULAR FINISH For the second time in a week Derailment and the Riccarton apprentice, T. W. Wilson, combined effectively to win a hack sprint. _ Running out hack nominations in the Seadown Handicap, Derailment won after a battle With Red Jimmy and Awatere. Heads separated them, and Donna Maria was close at hand in fourth place.

Derailment started on the inside, but after drifting a few places while finding his feet, he had to be brought wide to challenge. He responded generously, in the manner of a horse that could do well over more ground. Hush Lady, On Account, and Tutton ran themselves out in front. On Account was the favourite, and finished fifth.
