Lincoln College Has Draw

Lincoln College received its first set-back in the senior reserve grade when it was held to a three-all draw by University B on Saturday. In its previoups games Lihcoln College had won easily, winning one game, against Albion, by 50 points. Faced by determined tackling the Lincoln College backs showed little enterprise against University B. Finding its back play thwarted Lincoln College ! then tried to keep play in the forwards but met with no more success there. Now ths* Lincoln College has drawn a game, the only undefeated team tn the senior reserve grade is University A. Ellesmere Games After four rounds in the Ellesmere competition Leeston remains the only unbeaten team. On Saturday it beat Lincoln, 12-3. and in the main game Irwell had a surprisingly easy 16-0 win over Southbridge. Southbridge v.» irwell Irwell scored a good, win against Southbridge in a game that was expected to be very close. Both back-lines seemed hesitant to pass the ball, and the game developed into a series of Une-outs and mauls. In these Irwell outlasted Southbridge, D. McMillan and D. Heslop playing with vigour. M. Heslop, at half-back, was a constant danger with his jinking runs and well-placed kicks over the forwards. Down 0-3 at half-time. Southbridge was playing well, with L. Jones at the head of many forward rushes. I. Millar won a lot of ball from the line-out but his efforts were frittered away by For Dwell tries were scored by R. Doak, D. Heslop, M. Hesop. R. Doak kicked two conversions and one penalty goal. Leeston v.“ Lincoln In bright sunshine on a good turf Leeston was hard put to it to beat a spirited Lincoln team. From the outset Leeston attempted to throw the ball about, but bad passing poor running nullified these attempts. Lincoln was quick to capitalise on these mistakes, and was first to score. For the first 20 minutes. Lincoln held a territorial advantage, although Leeston was winning most of the ball, the Lincoln backs standing very shallow and kicking through whenever the ball went loose. In the forwards Lincoln held the heavier Leeston pack well, but faded towards the end. The two full-backs, A. Boon (Leeston) and G. Barclay (Lincoln). were the best backs, with Boon the steadier. R. Taiaroa tried hard all day but found the tackling too sure. M. Earnshaw had a lot of covering to do, and played well. In the forwards. J. Sheehan was at the head of many leeston movements and was well supported by G. McMahon. Although small, McMahon was the best loose forward on the field. For Lincoln. P. Smith, at lock, tried hard to rally his team in the second half, but lack of fitness let him down. Leeston's tries were scored by G. McMahon, R. Taiaroa and M. McClure and G. Johnson kicked a field goal. T. Newell scored for Lincoln. New Zealand Regiment had the bye. Lower Grades Junior A—N.Z. Regiment 21, Prebbleton 9; Leeston 21, Peninsula 6; Burnham a bye.
