PAYMENT IN BAND
Civil Servants’ Position (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 20. The members of the 1962 National Band of New Zealand who are civil servants will be paid in full if married and half rate if single while on tour. This was announced by the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Kinsella) during the band’s programme at Masterton on Saturday. There are five civil servants in the bandall married. Some other members of the band are being paid half or full pay by their employers. About 20 of the 42 members are left to their own resources. Most of the married men in this group were able to tour because their wives had taken up employment, said the band’s secretary. Mr G R. Mowat, today. To assist the band financially, W. D. and H. O. Wills. Ltd., have undertaken to sponsor the band’s New Zealand tour so all takings will be available for the band’s overseas tour. The band will leave New Zealand on June 1 and will return in September.
