Police were rushed to the Bell Block area tonight to follow possible new leads in the search for George Wilder, who escaped from the New Plymouth prison early on Thursday evening. A report was received of a man being seen running along Mountain road toward Inglewood. A police party was sent to the area, together, with the police dog, Cito. 'All police officers in the area were alerted, ready to begin a full-scale search should the lead prove promising. Wilder, aged 239 who had served nine months of a four-year term arising out of convictions for burglary, car conversion, and shopbreaking, made his escape by scaling the 30ft prison wall on Thursday evening. The first report of a sighting was received on Friday evening in the Burgess Park area, which is some three miles .west of the scene of the present’ search, across country.
On Saturday police found a bicycle concealed under a bridge not far from Egimont village. The description of the cycle tallied with one reported missing from Vogeltown the night Wilder escaped.
