WESTPORT QUAKES

No Further Damage (From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT. May 20 Saturday night was a restlese one for many persons in the Westport and Cape Foulwind areas, with more frequent earthquake shocks and rumblings occurring than since the first few hours following the main shock on May 10. There were some rather severe jolts in the middle of the night, and again about 9 a m this morning, but no further damage is reported in the town The shocks are reported to be not so severe in towns north of Westport, but an ominous rumbling—as if there is some disturbance out at sea— is audible most of the time in the Cape FoulwindCharleston area Visitors from Greymouth last _ night described the shocks at Westport as more severe than the strongest felt in Greymouth since the trouble started more than a week ago Few Guests In Hotels The hotels at Westport had few guests occupying them last night, and those travellers who come regularly to the town have made their calls as brief as possible However, it appears that most of those who have left Westport during the earthquake period have been either those residents going on holiday who have accelerated their plans, or visitors returning to their homes after spending holidays in the district The period has been a rather unnerving one for many especially the aged and children.

The primary schools are to open as usual in the district tomorrow, and the secondary schools will start their terms or. Tuesday A fall of stone in the mam drive of the Wareatea mine at Denniston came down today and will disorganise work in that section tomorrow until it is cleared About 40 men are affected
