Earthquake In Mexico Causes Heavy Damage

MEXICO CITY. May 20 The second earthquake in eight days rocked Mexico City and other areas along the Pacific yesterday. Two men were killed, one toppling to his death from a swaying building. As the earthquake shook the city for one minute and 10 seconds, a frightened driver lost control of his truck and ran over a man in the street The pedestrian was killed Damage was slight in Mexico City but extensive in Acapulco, the Pacific coast resort town, and surrounding areas.
Tourists in Acapulco rushed from their hotels in panic but none was reported injured However, 17 residents of the city were taken to hospitals Power failed and one major hotel was forced to close down because, of damage. , . • Acapaulco was once again near the epicentre. The Mexican Government Seismological Bureau said the earthquake was not related to the last one. They said it was caused by an earth settling movement in the sea bff the west coast There was no tidal wave, however. The earthquake registered 6 on the Mercalli scale that goes up to 10.
