SEARCH FOR RELICS

Expedition To

Arctic

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, May 16.

A British expedition leaves today for the Canadian Arctic to search for relics of Sir John Franklin’s northwest passage expedition, which disappeared after leaving England in 1845.

No conclusive evidence has ever been found to explain its failure. The expedition consists of four officers from the Royal Marine forces, the Volunteer Reserve, and the Special Air Service.

They intend to canoe down 285 miles of the Black river to Cape Britannia, in Chantrey Inlet on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. There have been numerous expeditions to the area where Franklin disappeared, but the Chantrey Inlet area has never been adequately searched. The last major expedition was in 1930.
