Badminton INVITATION TOURNEY
First Series Of Matches
The first of the Canterbury Badminton Association’s series of invitation tournaments was held this week. These tournaments will continue until the end of the season’s representative matches, their object being to give hard match practice to prospective members of the provincial teams.
Notable displays in the first series were given by B. Crofts, R Miller and Mrs M Miller. Crofts went down only after a hard struggle to the present Canterbury men s singles title-holder D B. Reid, 14-18. 13-15. Miller, still a junior, had a good match with last season’s Division HI representative J. Wilson, and Mrs Miller had a surprise victory over Miss K. Williams, who last season won the Canterbury women’s doubles and was runner-up tor the singles title Results were:
Men’s Singles.—D. . Henderson beat R. Macefield. 15-0, 15-11; D. Reid beat B. Crofts, 18-14, 15-13; J. Read beat S. Clarke. 9-15. 15-1, 15-11; R. Hall beat M. Ford, 15-12, 15-10: P. Boatwood beat T. Harniess, 17-14, 15-9; J. Wilson beat R. Miller, 15-12, 11-15, 15-12; T. Bradbury beat R. Dunn. 13-0, 12-15, 15-0; R. Barrell beat R. Kirton. 1513. 15-1: P. Serra beat L. Cameron. 15-3. 15-9. Women's Singles.—Mrs S. Dean beat Miss K. Williams. 11-8, 11-0; Miss N. Baty beat Mrs M. Brown. 11-«. 12-11; Mrs M. Miller beat Mrs K. Williams. 3-11. 11-8, 12-10; Miss C. Parris beat Miss O. Williams, 3-11,. 11-8, 11-7.
