Van Der Hagen’s First Visit
Another member of the Royal Interocean Line's fleet has entered the well-established trade this Dutch company maintains among South American, African. Australian, New Zealand and Malaysian ports and Heng Kong. She is the four-year-old motor ship, Van der Hagen, which arrived at Lyttelton from Picton recently to discharge East African cargo and load for return. The Van der Hagen, which has a crew of 75, has accommodation for 12 passengers and is commanded by Captain J. A. Van den Broek Humphrev, of Velp. near Arnhem. Most of tee ship's company—the bulk Chinese apart from officers—are paying their first visit to New Zealand.
Before entering tee New Zealand-African service, the Van der Hagen operated on the Japan-West Africa trade, said Captain Van den Broek Humphrey yesterday. He said the last part of his name derived from an English ancestor who belonged to Liverpool many years ago. The Van der Hagen will complete loading and discharging at Dunedin and will then return to East Africa, calling at Scute Australian ports on the way. Captain Van den Broek Humphrey expects to be relieved for his annual furlough when he reaches Africa.
