MENZIES TO GO ABROAD
U.K. And U.S. Visits
(NZ Press Assn.— Copyright) CANBERRA, May 16.
The Australian Prime Minister, Mr Menzies, will make a special trip to London and Washington during the parliamentary winter recess for personal talks with Mr Macmillan and President Kennedy on Common Market and other problems.
Parliament rises for the winter recess at the end of this week. Mr Menzies announced his decision this afternoon. He is expected to go abroad in the early part of the recess and to be back for the opening of the budget session in August. The trip is designed to follow up work done by the Minister for Trade, Mr John McEwen, who completed a six-weeks’ tour of Western Europe and the United States last month.
The trip will enable Mr Menzies to have direct personal, and frank conversations on the implications of the Common Market for Australia before the formal meeting of Commonwealth Prime Ministers in September.
