Trade With Asia

Sir, —I. notice with regret a report in “The Press” in which Mr Henry Bolte, the Premier of Victoria, advocates a policy of collusion between Australia and New Zealand in their trade dealings with Asia. Mr Bolte anticipates a clash between his country and New Zealand over sales to Asian markets of primary produce. His answer to this problem is that they should no longer compete but, instead, combine. This attitude does Mr Bolte no credit; nor does it take into account the interests of the consumers. This is. a far cry from the principles of free enterprise or free competition supposed to be upheld by the respective governments of these two countries.—Yours, etc., W. L. RUNCIMAN. May 16, 1962.
