N.Z. WHEAT OUTPUT

Self-sufficiency

Favoured

New Zealand had grown enough wheat for its own requirements before and there was no reason why it could not do so again, said the chairman (Mr S. M. Wilson) at the annual conference yesterday of the agriI culture section of North Can- | terbury Federated Farmers. Mr Wilson suggested it would greatly benefit the nation’s economy if all wheat requirements were grown in New Zealand. If this policy was adopted it would conserve overseas funds, diversify production, and help the labour situation, he said.

The amount to be grown would have to be governed by a Government decision, said Mr G. A. Watt.

Mr Wilson put forward his suggestion as a motion, and it was supported by the conference as an expression of its opinion.
