TUBERCULOSIS IN CATTLE

Progress Of S.I. Campaign

At long last an organised programme wae under way to eradicate tuberculosis, first in the South Island and ultimately throughout New Zealand, said the chairman (Mr J. W. Overton) in his annual report to the dairy section of the North Canterbury Federated Farmers.

Golden Bay had already been declared a free area and Southland was well under way. From June to September it was hoped to test all dairy cows throughput Canterbury. “It is hoped this momentum will make itself felt in the North Island, where it is possible to have tuberculosis under control within five years,” Mr Overton said. "With such keen competition in finding suitable markets for our primary produce it does seem strange we should be one of the last dairying countries to tackle the tuberculosis problem.” Town-milk herds in Christchurch numbering 17,500 head were. tested during the year, and only 23 reactors, or 0.1 per cent., were found, mostly in bought-in stock.
