Diefenbaker’s Policy

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) BROCKVILLE

(Ontario), May 10. The Canadian Prime Minister (Mr John Diefenbaker) said last night that his Government had no intention of acquiring any nuclear arms for Canada as long as there was any chance of achieving disarmament.

“We do not intend to expand or allow the expansion of nuclear weapons beyond those who have them.” he said. “We want disarmament."

Mr Diefenbaker made the statement during an election speech, Canadian Press reported. “We will have available the necessary aircraft and Bomarcs (guided missiles). “But so long as we are pursuing the ways of disarmament. we will not allow the extension of the nuclear family into Canada.” The Conservative leader, who is seeking re-election on June 18, coupled the statement on his position on nuclear weapons with an attack on the policies of the Liberal party leader, Mr Lester Pearson.
