DANGEROUS
Fire Caused By Explosion (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 11. A highly inflammable solvent in a carpet dirt-proof-ing preparation caused an explosion and fire which damaged a Pakuranga home on March 23, Mr H. S. Neal, explosives inspector for the Internal Affairs Department, said today. Tests in Wellington indicated that the solvent used to dilute the silicone in the preparation caused the house to be filled with inflammable vapour; he said. An electrical arc caused possibly by the telephone or power supply ignited the solvent in the air. Mr Neal warned that cleaning of carpets, rugs or clothing should be done away from electrical equipment or anything that could cause ignition. It was preferable to do cleaning outside. About £450 worth of damage was done to the Pakuranga house, and furniture valued at £750 was damaged. The house and contents were insured.
