CAR DRIVER KILLED
Collision At Prebbleton
A man was killed, and his wife, his mother-in-law. and two of his children injured when a car and a van collided at the junction of Springs road and Boundary road, Prebbleton, about 550 p.m. on Thursday. The dead man was: John WilHam Kitchener Rowney. aged 46. a workman, of 52 Seiwyn street, Lees ton. Mr Rowney was the driver of the van, with his wife, mother-in-law. and three children as passengers. The car was driven by William Edgar Hazlett, of Wellesley avenue. Invercargill. He was the only occupant. He suffered abrasions and shock. Members of the Rowney family injured were: Mrs Hazel Rowney, aged about 35. shoulder and internal injuries. Her condition is reported as fair.
David Rowney. aged five, head injuries. His condition is satisfactory. Francis Rowney. aged two. head injuries. His condition is fairly satisfactory. Mrs Ruby Grace Rickerby, aged 68. of Cunningham street, Leeston, fractured jaw and lacerations to the face. Her condition is fairly comfortable. Mr Rowney’s daughter. Rae. aged eight, also a passenger in his car, was uninjured. Two St. John ambulances were called out from Christchurch to take the injured to the Christchurch Hospital, and Mrs Rickerby to the Burwood Hospital. Constable N. Ward, erf the motor-accident branch of the Pol ice attended the accident
