Building Industry

Sir, —May I apologise for an error in the letter sent you yesterday. The phrase. "Christchurch is in one of the parts," was intended to read “Christchurch is not one of the parts in New Zealand . . .” —Yours, etc, ON THE SIDELINES. April 19, 1962.

Sir.—l did not misrepresent “On the Sidelines” as he certainly did agree with Mr Rae as to the building industry being overcommitted in Christchurch. In the light of Mr Unwin’s statement as to the present decline in the building trade. Mr Nordmeyer is right, and Mr Rae is wrong. I suggest this correspondent re-.ead Mr Unwin’s statements and Mr Nordmeyer’s address. If the building industry is overeommitted. why does the State Advances Corporation continue to grant housing loans, and why is it that builders are crying out for more industrial and Government building contracts? Round the outer suburbs are hundreds of abandoned half-completed houses, and also quite a few abandoned weed-covered concrete foundations. Who is to blame for this? It is the Tory Government which is to blame because it has severely slashed the purchasing power of the people and is still doing so.—Yours, etc, DISILLUSIONED NATIONALIST. April 19, 1962.
