Bowls Claims Them All

TT is interesting to note A how many and varied prominent sporting personalities eventually turn towards the game of bowls. Bowls is becoming increasingly popular, and although it may not appeal to a large proportion of the younger and more athletic sportsmen, it does attract, in vast numbers, those who have retired from their particular fields The Canterbury Bowling Club can boast of many such personalities. G. Scrimshaw, from the Rugby field, is the only former All Black, but other notables who have played representative Rugby are on the membership list—such names as A. F. H. Morrow, who was also a New Zealand surfing representative, and P. A. Smith, who later played Rugby League for New Zealand. R. F. Calder was -a member of the Canterbury Rugby Union management committee, while J. Turpin, a well-known footballer in his day. distinguished himself by winning a New Zealand tournament at bowls. W. H. Lodge is also prominent on the administration side of Rugby. J. Sanders is another who has played Rugby League for New Zealand, and F. Lees was a professional league player for Oldham, in Yorkshire. Representative soccer players include S. Cawtheray, W. H. Cooke, W. Kennedy, and H. Latterway. Cawtheray

played for New Zealand. R. H. Scott, more widely known as a New Zealand cricketer, and R. C. Bums, a former Canterbury wicketkeeper, have also turned to bowls. Turning his hand from Rugby and then billiards, D. Howarth progressed in bowls to the extent of winning a New Zealand tournament. M. Tonkin, a national surf representative, R. Gracie, a New Zealand hockey player, A. Stubberfield (rowing*. C. Hern (boxing), and D. T. R. Rolton (cycling) are now all keen bowlers.

Possibly the most noteworthy change, however, is that of those two well-known jockeys of other years, G. H. Humphries and B. H. Morris.
