PROBLEMS FOR NEW SOCCER SELECTOR

’THE problems facing the 1 new OanCerbury soccer selector (Mr V. Smith) are immediately obvious from the line-up of the teams he has chosen for the first representative trials at English Park on Monday. The search for a centre-forward will! undoubtedly take up most of Mr Smith’s atten-

tion. and the right-wing position win possibly cause him further concern.

With the transfer of E. Charlton to Manawatu, three players remain who appeared in the centre-forward position lasrt season' —Western’s T. Haydon, and the Shamrock pair W. Yates and H. Scholten. Scholten was not available for Monday’s trial; Yates was nominated and has been omitted; and Haydon will be playing at insideforward. The four centre-forwards in the trial are K. Olley (Rangiora), B. Rumibold (City), G. Verwoerd (Neerlandia) and M. Clements (Western). Olley. a former New Zealand player, has not played centre-forward for his club this season, nor has Rumibold. Clements is a younger player of great promise, but the selector will no doubt be regretting the non-availability of the former international, A. van Rooyen. He has been outstanding in local competition this season.

Good inside - forwards abound, with P. Rerxnehl. Heydon and D. Anderson contending for the two positions. Rennell must be a certainty, and either of the other two would serve Canterbury well. A. Varham (Technical), a reserve for Monday’s trial, eould also

come into consideration. The tour right-wingers on trial are I. McCallum (Nomads), J. Killick (Shamrock). M. Jones (Technical) and R. Bruce (City). Of these. Bruce played twice tor Canterbury last season in that position. Canterbury should be well served in defence. D. Waugh is not available for Monday’s trial, but either he or P. Flynn could fill the centrehalf position left vacant by the retirement, perhaps temporary only, of J. Le Poidevin. D. Simmons, centrehalf for the first four matches last season, could also come back into consideration.
