Obituary MRS H. de THIERRY
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 20. The death has occurred in Auckland of Mrs Harriett de Thierry. She was in her eighties. Her husband. Mr Frederick James de Thierry, who died in 1931, was the grandson of Baron de Thierry, who arrived in New Zealand from France in 1837 with plans to set up in the north an independent kingdom.
Mrs de Thierry was born at Tairua, in Coromandel county. Her husband was direct in line to the title but did not assume it. He and his wife lived most of their lives in Auckland.
The novelist Robin Hyde spent some time in research at their home before writing “Check to Your Kings.'' based on the life of Baron de Thierry. Mrs de Thierry is survived by three daughters.
