New Brighton School Mural
A handsome mural of the whole of the Brighton beaches and neighbouring residential areas up to the Port Hills now decorates the assembly hall of the New Brighton School. It was painted by Mr B. Johnson, who teachers a form I and II class, from panoramic photographs taken by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. It took Mr Johnson eight hours a day for a week to complete the final detail of the 34ft by Bft mural.
This innovation became possible through the conversion of the former district high school quarters into an assembly hall. Partition walls were removed, children knocked down all nails before the floor was sanded, and former pupils and friends of the school have given chairs for the hall. Outside school hours, it will be used for a variety of community activities.
