Men may be shot into space in large numbers before long, until the whole business begins to look like popcorn on a hot stove; governments will rise and fall; the All Blacks will win, and lose; there will be more threats of nuclear war. There may even be nuclear war, which would bring calamitous results, such as the susgmsion of this column. ut until that awful day, the young women of the world will, by and large, be mainly preoccupied with how they look. It is a full-time business and, one must admit, business as a rule looks good. From the top of the beehive to the excruciating point of the shoes, the young woman

of today looks elegant, self-assured. She has to be. to keep up with the girl next door. And when some new vogue appears, they all have to take part, whether it is purple eye shadow or rings, worn through the nose. So it was that a young Christchurch woman bought herself, a little while ago, one of those elegant little umbrellas which might seem to be rather inadequate ports in a storm, but which are certainly ornamental. She was proud of her acquisition, and she took it with her everywhere. Particularly when she was being taken out by a certain young man. On one particular expedition—early enough in their acquaintance to call

for a special effort by both parties to make the best possible impression —she took her pretty little umbrella with her, wearing it on the arm with Parisian chic, or something. They had a meal together. Before they left, she repaired to the powder room—it was at least 10 minutes since she had done her nose and touched up her hair.
