TEACHERS “SORE”
Shortage Of Equipment
Staff at Riccarton H.gh School were “sore” about the lack of science equipment. said the headmaster 'Mr A. J. Gainsfard). The equipment. made 'scarce by import restrictions. !should be treated as necesIsaries by the Government. ■Mr Gainsford told a meeting |of the school's board of 'governors. I Views expressed at the (meeting will be put into a I letter by the chairman (Processor H. R. Gray) and sent to the Education Department. This move had unanimous 'support from the board. I “We ordered necessary 1 equipment this year, but we (got a letter from the supplyring firm saying ‘very sorry, but we do not have sufficient overseas funds,’ ” Mr Gainsford said. ‘We are not asking for more than our share." he said. ‘‘We are only one high 'school suffering. The country must suffer unless something is done to fill this need.” He suggested a Government investigation to see that these items were set aside from non-necessaries.
The problem might be solved if the Education De. partment ordered its own equipment, said Mr A. J. Lazarus. ‘‘Perhaps the Customs Department, in dealing with firms, dosn’t know some of this equipment is for education.”
