Obituary LIEUT.-COLONEL C. B. BRERETON

(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, April 20. Lieutenant-Colonel C. B. Brereton, a farmer, soldier, and historian, died in Nelson on Wednesday. He was 86 He commanded the 12th (Nelson) Company of the Ist Battalion of the Canterbury Regiment when the Main Body of the Ist N.Z.E.F. was formed. His war service ranged from GaUipoli to France. After the war he bought a mixed farm at Orinoco and became one of the first successful tobacco growers in the Nelson district. In 1938 he became curator of the Nelson Institute Museum. He was a foundation member of the Association of Galleries and Museums in New Zealand. He wrote several books including •‘■Tales of Three Campaigns.” the “History of Nelson Institute.” and “Vanguard of the South.” During the Second World War he commanded the Nelson Home Guard Battalion. He was awarded the R.S.A. gold star badge and certificate of merit.

MR F. T. SANDFORD

(Special Crspdt. N.ZJ’.A) LONDON, April 19. Mr Frank Taylor Sandford, formerly official secretary at New Zealand House in London, has died at the age of 83. Born at Arrowtown, he was educated at Christchurch Boys’ High School and he started his career in the Department of Industries and Commerce.

He was appointed immigration officer in London in 1922 and before becoming official secretary in 1931 was in charge of the trade and produce section at New Zealand House. He retired in 1940. when he was awarded the 0.8. E. He supervised the issue of National Patriotic Fund comforts to New Zealand servicemen until 1943, when he acted as official secretary for a further period. Known universally as ’Sandy,” he was a popular figure in New Zealand circles and was a member of the New Zealand Society, the London New Zealand Cricket Club and the New Zealand Lodge.
