PILGRIMS MOURN
Easter In Jerusalem
(N JZ J 5. A.-Reuter—Copyright) JERUSALEM, April 20. Thousands of pilgrims are in Jerusalem for Easter.
The beautiful weather which marked the start of Holy Week changed to overcast skies yesterday as the pilgrims crowded the winding streets, the British United Press reported. Traditional pilgrimages by all Christian denominations began yesterday afternoon from the heart of the old city down the Valley of Kidron to the Gardens of Gethsemane, where Jesus was betrayed by Judas. The procession continued into the night.
Last night, the Anglican Archbishop of Jerusalem led one procession to Gethsemane from the site of the house of the disciple, John. In both tile old and the new city, all churches of every denomination were crowded with pilgrims.
In Rome bells were silent and the altars were bare in the city's 500 churches. No Mass was said and sacred images were draped in purple, the British United Press said.
Today, Pope John was to commemorate Christ’s death by driving four miles outside the walls of the Vatican to the Basilica of St. Paul's to take part in a liturgical rite. He was to wear a red cape —the Papal colour of mourning.
