Decision Not To Go Back (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, April 1«. Burnside freezing workers have decided not to return to work in the meantime. They want the Governmentappointed chai rm .u) of a compulsory conference to have the power to settle the disnute.

At the request of the Federation of Labour executive, the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) today- agreed to call the conference provided the men returned to work. But the men will not go back unless the enairman has the power to judge on the issue of the eight men who were dismissed from the works almost three years ago. The Burnside branch of the Freezing Workers’ Union made this dei’sion at a meeting yesterday After Mr Shani agreed to call a compulsory conference, the national executive of the Federation of Labour recommended that the Burnside branch return to work.

Tonight the union did not know if a chairman had been named and what his powers were likely to be. The chairman's authority will be discussed at a meeting of the union today. The branch has asked the Otago-Southland. district union to call on all other branches of the union to hold stop-work meetings and discuss the Burnside dispute. These meetings will probably be held tomorrow
