DAMAGE TO MANHOLES
Investigation By Drainage Board
Until recently the Christchurch Drainage Board had not experienced, any structural failures with cast-iron manhole covers, which have been standard in the district since the early days of the board's operations, but in the last month or two 20 covers have been found cracked Most of them are in the new Sawyers Arms road sewer contract.
Tests had been carried out at Canterbury University, Mr H. F. Page, the chief engineer (operations), told the board, the matter had been discussed with manufacturers, and various possible causes had been Investigated by elimination. “It appears at the moment that the use of vibrating rollers by roading contractors could be the chief factor, as a test fractured a cover with two passes of the roller.” Mr Page said. “The running of this form of equipment over covers during road restoration will, therefore, be prohibitefi. However, this may not be the only cause.
